EXPOSED: Inside Alabama's Prison Crisis - 'The Alabama Solution' Documentary Screening (2025)

A powerful documentary, "The Alabama Solution," has sparked a much-needed conversation about the state's prison system. This eye-opening film, currently streaming on HBO, offers a unique perspective on the harsh realities within Alabama's prisons.

The documentary's public screening in Selma was organized by prison reform activists, aiming to make the film accessible to a wider audience and initiate discussions. Rodreshia Russaw-Glasgow, Executive Director of The Ordinary People Society, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Not everyone has access to HBO, and watching this film together can provide a sense of community and support."

What sets "The Alabama Solution" apart is its raw and unfiltered portrayal of prison life, as much of the footage was captured by the inmates themselves. Diyawn Caldwell, founder of Both Sides of the Wall, explained, "Viewers will witness the inhumane treatment by prison staff and the daily struggles and deaths that occur under their watch."

Bruce Adams, a former inmate with ten years of experience, shared his perspective, "The conditions are unbearable. The food, the guards—it's all a struggle."

Kenneth Glasgow, Al Sharpton's half-brother and a long-time reform advocate, also weighed in. Glasgow, who has been incarcerated and dedicated 31 years to prison reform, said, "I've changed laws in six states, but seeing the work being done inside prisons is even more impactful."

The documentary's impact extends beyond Selma, with free screenings scheduled in Dothan, Mobile, Huntsville, and Montgomery. The Montgomery screening will take place at Greater Destiny Worship Center on October 25 at 1 p.m.

"The Alabama Solution" is a call to action, shedding light on the urgent need for prison reform. It invites us to consider the human cost of our prison system and the stories that often go untold.

And here's where it gets controversial: Should we be relying on inmates to expose the truth about our prisons? What responsibilities do we, as a society, have to ensure humane treatment and conditions for those behind bars? These are questions that this documentary leaves us with, and ones that we must grapple with as we strive for a more just and compassionate society.
