Negros Occidental Agro-Fishery Suffers P35M Damage from Typhoon Tino (2025)

The devastating impact of Typhoon Tino on Negros Occidental's agriculture and fishery sector is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of these industries to extreme weather events. With an initial estimated loss of PHP35 million, the province's Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) is facing a challenging recovery process.

The damage extends across various crops and regions, affecting rice fields, high-value crops, and even the fishery sector. Over 956 hectares of rice fields were impacted, with a total damage amount of PHP24.85 million. This affected 1,145 farmers across 89 barangays in 13 local government units (LGUs).

High-value crops, such as those grown by 22 farmers in four barangays, also suffered losses totaling PHP3.296 million. Additionally, 62 corn farmers reported damage worth PHP387,682, and the fishery sector incurred PHP6.47 million in losses, according to reports from seven fishermen in two LGUs.

OPA has activated its climate resiliency task force and deployed agriculturists, agricultural engineers, and aquaculturists to monitor and assess the damage in their respective areas. The office is also preparing for the crafting of further damage reports, with report officers and validators on standby.

This situation highlights the importance of climate resilience and adaptation strategies in agriculture and fishery sectors. As the world faces increasing climate challenges, it is crucial to explore innovative solutions and support systems to protect these vital industries.

But here's where it gets controversial: Should the responsibility for climate resilience fall solely on the shoulders of the agricultural and fishery sectors, or is it a collective effort that requires government intervention and support?
